Stain removal guide: what can and cannot be lifted

How professional cleaners approach common stains, and why some marks set permanently if left untreated.

Most fresh stains come out cleanly when treated promptly. Wine, coffee, makeup, oil and ink each respond to different chemistries β€” there is no single 'stain remover' that handles everything.

Wine, coffee and tea are water-soluble and respond well to gentle agitation and a tannin-targeted treatment, especially if they have not dried. Oil-based stains like salad dressing, lipstick or grease respond to solvent and need a pre-treatment before the dry cleaning cycle.

Set stains are harder. Heat β€” from a dryer, sun, or an iron β€” can lock a stain into the fibers permanently. So can age: protein stains like blood or egg cross-link with the fabric over time and become much harder to remove.

At Joy Dry Cleaners every garment is inspected at intake. If a stain is unlikely to come out we tell you up front before any work starts.

β—† Common questions

Related questions, answered.

What should I do at home before bringing in a stain?

Blot β€” never rub β€” with a clean cloth, and avoid heat. Skip household stain sprays on delicate fabrics; they can set some stains or bleach color.

Will every stain come out?

No. Heat-set stains, old protein stains, and some dyes can be permanent. We inspect at intake and tell you up front if a mark is unlikely to lift.
